Prairie Primer: The Life Cycle of a Butterfly

We have done this numerous times during our homeschooling adventures, and we love it.  Insect Lore will send you a container with five little caterpillars and all the food they need to survive until the chrysalis stage.  Sometimes one does not make it, as you see the tiny one on the side of the plastic.

Nonetheless, the caterpillars grow and grow very rapidly as they eat up most of the food.  Here they are preparing for the the chrysalis stage.

Once they look like this inside the plastic container, we open the lid and remove the little paper circle that they are connected to, and we pin it inside the butterfly keeper.  And we wait.  Anxiously!

In a few days, they will emerge from the chrysalis.  They drink sugar water, and you can provide fresh flowers and fruit.  We won't release ours because it is November.  Besides, they live longer in captivity.

Yay, butterflies!
